Why “decenter”?
New perspectives throughout history have decentered humanity from “the center of the world”.
We learned the Earth is not at the core of the universe. That humans emerged from the same evolutionary processes as other life. That even our own minds are shaped by forces beyond conscious control.
This is not a recent story. It’s been a continual process of gaining (or rediscovering) perspective across different places and peoples from the earliest moments of our history.
Knowledge has repeatedly forced us to see ourselves differently. But at the same time modern society remains deeply anthropocentric. Technological progress has expanded human capability while accelerating ecological instability.
Our relationship with nature, animals and ourselves has been transformed.

storylines:
where culture meets reality
the next great decentering
Today, we face another moment of decentering. Advances in artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology are beginning to decenter humans from our own minds, bodies and future as a species.
The response can neither be to reject modernity or blind acceleration. We can’t escape into an idealized state of nature, or rely on some futuristic utopia.
evolution,
together
Decenter is a call for perspective, imagination and creation. A willingness to step outside default ways of thinking to build a future that will sustain us all.
We explore the ideas, culture, technology and systems reshaping modernity.
We’re interested in the spaces where where cities meet nature, technology meets the environemnt, and culture meets reality.
The future demands we rethink how we live between these borderlands.
That is the true work of decentering.
